Ilsur Metshin, Mayor of Kazan, President of the UCLG Eurasia section,
President of the UN Advisory Committee on Local Authorities, took part in a
meeting of the UCLG Presidency online. It extended the term of office of the
Secretary General of the organization, Emilia Saiz. The participants of the
meeting were greeted by Ugur Ibrahim Altay, the President of UCLG.
This year, the World Organization United Cities and Local Governments
celebrates its 20th anniversary. The Eurasia section was established on April
2, 2004 in Kazan.
“The goals of sustainable development are being mastered, climate
initiatives, principles of responsible consumption and production are being
promoted. Today we unite more than 800 municipalities of the Eurasian region
countries and continue developing, defending the interests of local authorities
in Eurasia and strengthening the global municipal movement,”- the head of the
city noted.
According to Ilsur Metshin, despite the difficult international
situation, the unity of the organization remains consistent. The participants
set common goals to create favorable conditions in cities and develop international
municipal movement.
“I am grateful to all the members of the Presidency and Secretary
General Emilia Saiz mutual maintaining the unity of the organization, for
supporting the common goals of the UCLG,”- the President of the Eurasia section
of the organization noted.
Last year, UCLG-Eurasia held retreats on sustainable development goals
in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Russia. The contribution to the achievements of
the association was personally made by the UCLG Secretary General, Emilia Saiz.
The head of the city noted its invaluable role in maintaining the unity of the
organization in difficult geopolitical conditions.
“In many ways, our achievements demonstrate our work and efforts
invested personally by Emilia. The time has come to extend her term of office
as Secretary General of UCLG. If Emilia Saiz agrees to continue working for the
benefit of the organization, we are ready to support this candidacy on behalf
of the cities of Eurasia,”- Ilsur Metshin addressed the Secretary General of
UCLG.
Next, Emilia Saiz made a report on the state of the organization. The
meeting participants also discussed the priorities of the UCLG for 2024, the
role of local and regional authorities in the current geopolitical situation.
