The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur
Metshin paid a visit to Nikolai Karpyuk, a veteran of the blockade. On behalf
of the Russian President and the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan, the Mayor awarded
the veteran, foreman of the first crew of the K-19 nuclear submarine, with a
commemorative medal «80 Years of the Great Victory» and a certificate.
«On the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great
Patriotic War, I would like to present this commemorative medal to you. You are
a blockade veteran, a representative of the most honorable generation. I wish
you good health, longevity and happiness», – the Mayor said to the veteran.
Nikolai Karpyuk was born on August 18, 1938, in
Leningrad. In 1942, his family was evacuated to Kazan. Since childhood, he
began to dream of a deep – sea voyage. In 1957, after receiving a summons for
military service, he joined the Northern Fleet and served on a submarine.
«I graduated with honors and was proud of my
achievement. I was awarded a red card and immediately promoted to foreman», – the veteran said.
On the nuclear submarine, Nikolai worked as a rocket
launcher in the fourth compartment. The crew consisted of 100 people. Upon his
return, he worked at the Kazan Optical and Mechanical Plant. He combined his
studies at the Kazan Chemical Technical Institute with his work. He was the
chairman of the workshop committee at the Kazan Optical and Mechanical Plant.
Eventually, he became the head of a bureau.
Today, Nikolai lives in an apartment in Derbyshki, his
wife passed away three years ago.
