The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin got acquainted with the main initiatives of the city’s Sustainable Development Strategy. The projects were presented by the heads of 7 out of 15 project groups working on the greening of urban infrastructure, the development of creative industries, as well as a closed-loop economy and healthy lifestyle.
Almost 1,800 tons of waste are removed from Kazan every day, and up to 2,000 tons during peak periods. Over the past 20 years, the amount of waste has increased by about four times. The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin urged to develop measures to reduce the amount of waste.
As a result, the 2030 Sustainable Development Strategy was developed with an outlook until 2040. Valeria Marshalova, Director of the KOMANDA Strategic Management Agency, presented the Strategy at a session of the Kazan City Duma last year. Therefore, 15 project teams were formed in Kazan, bringing together representatives of government, business, science, and the expert community. These teams proposed about 250 initiatives, with 30 selected as strategic priorities.
Aigul Latypova, Director of the Directorate of Parks and Squares, spoke about the formation of an environmental mindset. Irek Rizvanov, Head of the Department of Education, focused on environmental education. Yevgeny Chekashov, Director General of PZhKH Management Company, spoke about the transition from separate waste collection to a closed-loop economy. Albert Shainurov, Chairman of the Land Improvement Committee, presented the idea of creating a continuous network of urban green spaces. Irina Bochkova, Head of the HR Department of the Kazan Executive Committee, presented the opportunities for self-realization of residents and the development of creative industries. Vladimir Zhavoronkov, of the Kirovsky and Moskovsky Districts, spoke about the formation of a healthy lifestyle culture. One of the proposals was the creation of the Get Know Your Health service. Roman Fatkhutdinov, Head of the Sovetsky District, spoke about the creation of infrastructure for implementing the Sustainable Development Strategy.
