I. Metshin on the improvement of Lake Kaban: «I’m sure this will be a beloved place of our residents»

The improvement of Lake Nizhny Kaban along Mardjani Street is underway in Kazan. The installation of the wooden deck above the water is almost completed. The completion of the first stage of the third phase of the Kaban Lake improvement is 93%. The Tatarstan Minister of Construction Marat Aizatullin and Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin held a visiting meeting yesterday.

«The embankment along Lake Nizhny Kaban is one of the most significant improvement projects in Kazan. In 2015, when we were just starting to design the project, it was hard to imagine all transformations of the lake and its embankment. Today, it is one of the most beloved places of Kazan residents and tourists. Thanks to the support of the Rais of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, we are completing the ring around Lake Kaban. Next year, we will be undertaking the next stage of work along Marjani Street. Now we are completing the 5-km-long pedestrian promenade», – Ilsur Metshin said.

The most difficult stage – creating a foundation for the embankment – is already completed. To strengthen the shoreline, piles were installed – a total of 201 tons of metal structures were installed.

The project provides for minimal interference with the natural landscape. The main walking deck, with an area of more than 5,600 square meters, was installed above the water.

The area will also receive a new lighting system. The poles have already been installed. The main lighting will be integrated into the railings along the embankment. In some areas, lights will be installed on low supports, and architectural lighting will be provided along certain sections for the trees. About 170 small architectural forms will be installed on the embankment: 156 benches, 14 trash bins, and 6 navigation elements.

Observation decks are another key element of the project. A large observation deck will be located opposite the Kamal Theatre. The deck will be built in three levels for approximately 1,250 people.

Landscaping of the area is one of the most large‑scale parts of the project. Over 480 trees have been planted already. The plan includes more than 92,000 plants: 586 trees, more than 6,600 large shrubs and 12,700 small shrubs, 12,100 perennial flowers, 5,000 spring‑flowering plants, 35,000 grasses, and more than 20,000 aquatic plants.

The third phase is divided into two stages. In 2027, the work will move to an area of another 3.8 hectares – the upper promenade along Mardjani Street. The observation platforms will continue to be developed here, additional landscaping will be carried out, and a public space will be created that will be more closely linked to the historical buildings of the Old Tatar Settlement.
