(KZN.RU, July 2, by Renat Shirmanov) Kazan medal winners at the Universiade will reap triple financial rewards: from the federal and republican budgets and from the city. This was announced by Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin at a meeting with local athletes and prominent members of the Russian national team.
Ilsur Metshin noted that a record number of athletes - more than 660 – will represent Russia at the Universiade. The Republic of Tatarstan team will include 48 athletes competing in 20 events with 50 athletes in reserve. Kazan will be represented by 41 athletes competing in16 events with 45 more in reserve.
The mayor of Kazan welcomed the athletes who are already in the capital of Tatarstan preparing for the competitions in the sports complex of the city. Among those present were members of the Russian national swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo, clay pigeon shooting, field hockey and football teams.
"On behalf of all the citizens of Kazan I want to assure you that we’re going to support all the athletes the Russian team, but three times more so – the Kazan athletes. We’ve been looking forward to this international event from the moment we won at the second attempt the right to host the Universiade," said Ilsur Metshin.
"It is one thing to prepare the city and the other - to win the competitions. The main thing for you now is, in the language of athletes, not to "burn out". You need to be at the peak of your form, including psychological form. We'll be rooting for you, support you and pray for you," said the mayor of Kazan.
In response, the Kazan athletes assured the mayor that their physical and psychological shape gave them hope for the best. "We have set the highest goals, and we are able to fulfill them," said Vladimir Dyadyun, Rubin’s and the Russian national team’s forward.
"Kazan has never hosted such major international forums before. One will be able to judge about our joint work by the number of medals won. We are all expecting you to win and hope the Kazan athletes will make a significant contribution to the number of Gold medals won by Russia’s national team," concluded Ilsur Metshin.
