(KZN.RU, February 7, by Renat Shirmanov). The 22nd Winter Olympic Games have started in Sochi. A unique ceremony was held at the Fischt stadium. The official opening of the Games was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russia hosts the Olympics for the second time, the 22nd Summer Olympic Games having been held in Moscow in 1980. The Winter Games are being held in this country for the first time.
The leaders of 50 countries attended the Games opening ceremony. A Tatarstan delegation including Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin is on a working visit to the Olympics capital.
Over 40,000 spectators were present in the Fischt arena, and some three billion people watched the ceremony via a live TV broadcast. A traditional parade of the participating countries was held during the opening ceremony. The standard-bearer of our team was a famous athlete, bronze medalist of the 2010 Olympics, bobsledder Alexander Zubkov.
The strongest athletes from more than 80 countries, who will compete for 98 sets of medals, are participating in the Sochi Olympics.
