The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin held a meeting at the Central Stadium before
the upcoming reconstruction. Large-scale work will begin in December, in
addition to construction work, athletics tracks and plastic chairs will be
replaced. The renovated stadium will host the athletics competitions of the
BRICS Games. The previous renovation took place 19 years ago.
The Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin inspected the stands, locker rooms, as
well as utilities.
“The golden pages of the sports history of the capital of Tatarstan are
connected with the Central Stadium of Kazan. The football club Rubin became
champions in 2008 and 2009 here. The athletics arena is a favorite place of
citizens today, where a lot of champions have grown and continue to grow,
bringing sports glory to Kazan. Thanks to the Rais (Head) of our republic
Rustam Minnikhanov funding has been allocated and we will receive a renovated
Central Stadium for the BRICS Games,”- Ilsur Metshin said.
The Central Stadium includes a football field, athletics tracks, as well
as volleyball, gyms and locker rooms.
As part of the reconstruction, plastic seats in the stands will be
replaced, new athletics tracks will be laid. Repairs of the roof, façade and utilities
will be carried out. The galleries of the Central Stadium will also be
repaired: the walls and beams will be reinforced with rolling elements, walls
and ceilings will be renovated. The reconstruction will partially affect the
athletics arena, where the tracks will also be replaced.
The Central Stadium is in municipal ownership. The state customer of the
reconstruction will be the Ministry of Construction, Architecture and Housing
of Tatarstan.
According to Ilgiz Fakhriev, director of the Central Stadium, the work
will begin in December. It is planned to complete the work next year so that
the stadium can host the BRICS Games. The Games will take place on June 12 - 23,
2024 with participation of athletes from 60 countries. More than 350 sets of
medals will be played among three thousand athletes. A total of 27 sports will
be included in the competition program, 16 disciplines will be held at the
Central Stadium.
The meeting was attended by the Director of the GISU RT Niyaz Sitdikov,
Chairman of the Committee of Physical Culture and Sports Linar Garipov, Head of
the Department of Capital Construction Marat Samigulin.
For reference, the Central Stadium in Kazan was opened in June 1960, and
the first match between the Kazan football club Iskra and the Metallurg team
from Kamensk-Uralsky took place in August 1960. In the 70s, the stadium became
the home arena not only for the football club, but also for the hockey team
Uritsky Sports Club (currently – HC Ak Bars).
Now city and republican athletics and volleyball competitions are held
at the stadium. There are trainings in football, volleyball, athletics,
gymnastics and other sports. The stadium was used as the home arena of the
Rubin football club, it hosted matches of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA
Europa League.
