The 12-kilometer-long hydraulic
engineering structure will protect a site located below the Volga River level
from flooding. In the future, an embankment with recreation areas, and other
urban facilities will be constructed on the Novaya Portovaya residential area.
The dam's construction was divided into four stages.
«One of the most significant developments in construction
and landscaping in Kazan is Novaya Portovaya district. It may seem like we have
recently started, however, new residential areas are already emerging here. The
next crucial step is the construction of a hydraulic engineering project, the
first phase of which is scheduled to be completed in February», – Ilsur Metshin
said. He emphasized that there are plans to improve the embankment in the
future. «The abandoned and neglected area will transform into some of the most
beautiful districts in the city. We are at the start of what will hopefully be
a very beautiful and modern embankment that will enjoy our residents», – the Mayor
said.
The length of the dam will be 12 kilometers. As part
of the first phase, a 2.6-kilometer-long structure will be constructed. The
first 210 meters will protect the coastline and accelerate the commissioning of
residential facilities. After receiving funding, the next 2.4 kilometers will
be built. Steel water pipes, old storm sewers, and lighting networks from the
boat station will also be dismantled, according to Oleg Shipilov, director of the
construction company.
The first 210 meters will consist of two rows of steel dowels and 105
rods. The highest column, measured according to the Baltic elevation system,
will be 58 meters, while the nearest one will be 55 meters. A three-meter
difference in height between the two columns will help to control the waves in
case of a change in weather on the Volga. Sand will be rammed between the dowel
rows, and crushed stone will be poured on top.
This type of retaining wall is designed to withstand any pressure,
including ice accumulation. Its lifespan is estimated at 50 years. Oleg
Shipilov emphasized the importance of building the dam now, as further work on
the New Portovaya without it would be complicated.
As soon as the dam is completed, it will be landscaped. At the end of 2026,
the first stage of the Yanalif residential complex is planned to put into
operation, by which time the first section of the embankment to be completed as
well.
It is planned to open access to the water with wooden bridges and a
beach. A central square will feature a fountain, event area, amphitheater, and
light installations. Nordic walking classes, urban tours, jogging, and
excursions for citizens will take place there. In winter, a New Year’s town
will be set up on the embankment.
The large-scale development of the Novaya Portovaya area is expected to
be completed in 10 years. Renovation
work started in 2022.
