(KZN.RU, July 6, by Taisiya Basharkina) Today, on the opening day of the 27thWorld Summer Student Games in Kazan, the Universiade Torch Relay kicked off. The first torchbearer in the final stage of the relay was Mayor Ilsur Metshin.
The Flame handover ceremony and torch lighting was held in the Universiade Village. It was attended by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) President Claude-Louis Gallien, FISU Vice President and President of the Russian Student Sports Union Oleg Matytsin and Universiade Village Mayor Farid Abdulganiev.
"We are overwhelmed with a sense of pride and excitement, we want to say to all the guests - welcome to Kazan! The Student Games Flame has united and warmed the hearts of millions of people. It is our sincere desire that the warmth of the Flame remained with us forever, and we are proud to be contemporaries of this historic event," said Ilsur Metshin thanking all those who took part in this unique relay.
It is worth recalling that the scale of the 2013 Universiade Torch Relay is unparalleled in the history of the Student Games: in 359 days the torch crossed 108,000 km visiting the five continents and 30 student centers of Russia and Tatarstan. The main symbol of the Games was carried by 2,013 torchbearers.
Sharing his impressions after the start from the Universiade Village stage, Ilsur Metshin admitted that being the first torchbearer is both exciting and honorable. For five years, our city, the republic and the whole country have been working hard to prepare this wonderful event. The Universiade Flame has warmed Kazan, we have changed and the city itself and its residents have changed. May the Flame stay in our hearts forever," he wished those present.
The culmination of the Torch Relay will be the lighting of the Universiade Flame Bowl at the "Kazan-Arena" stadium tonight during the Games opening ceremony. The Flame will be extinguished on July 17 - the day of the Games closing ceremony.
