(KZN.RU, July 8, by Renat Shirmanov) The opening ceremony of the Universiade made all Russian citizens proud of their country. The unique show demonstrated to the world that Kazan and Tatarstan are able to organize an event of this kind at the highest level. Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin, who headed the organizing committee for the ceremony, stated this at today’s Business Monday meeting.
"People have worked hard for days over the past two and a half years. Thanks to this, we’re experiencing a sense of pride in our country. It should be noted that the Universiade opening ceremony of was almost 100 percent a domestic product," said Ilsur Metshin.
The mayor also recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin compared the scale of the Kazan Universiade with that of the Olympics. "This concerns the number of contested awards and the number of participants. Two more countries are represented here than at the Shenzhen Universiade. There are all prerequisites for the current Games to go down in history as the most extensive ones. But still, we have a lot to do to achieve this," said the mayor.
Ilsur Metshin noted that on the morning of July 7, preparations for the 2013 Universiade closing ceremony started.
