(KZN.RU, August 5, by Alisa Rozanova) A countdown began in Kazan to the upcoming16th World Aquatics Championships due in July 2015. This was announced by Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin at a Business Monday meeting. The mayor brought the flag of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) to the capital of Tatarstan.
"For the past five years we had been going toward the summit of the Universiade before finally reaching it. Now, this peak should be considered as a foundation for meeting new challenges," said the mayor.
Recall that Kazan took over the international competition at the closing ceremony of the 15th FINA World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona. Ilsur Metshin received the FINA flag from President of the International Swimming Federation Julio Cesar Maglione and Mayor of Barcelona Xavier Trias, which signified the start of Kazan's preparation for the 16th World Championships.
The Kazan mayor stressed that Russia was hosting the World Aquatics Championships for the first time and that the city had a serious task before it. "With our experience of the 2013 Universiade and the 15th World Championships in Barcelona, we know how to host a championship. However, we don't have much time to get into the swing – the 711 days will pass quickly," concluded the mayor.
Recall that the decision to hold the 16th FINA World Aquatics Championships in Kazan was announced July 15, 2011 at the FINA General Congress in Shanghai. The capital of Tatarstan won the bid to host the championship ahead of Guadalajara, Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Montreal.
