(KZN.RU, August 19, by Ekaterina Andreyeva) Yet another pedestrian street will appear in Kazan. A few days after the installation of road signs along Kayum Nasyri Street it will be completely closed to traffic. This was announced at a Business Monday meeting by Lenar Zakirov, the prefect of the "Old Town" territory.
He recalled that the idea of making Kayum Nasyri Street car-free was born simultaneously with that of the revival of Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda (Old-Tatar Settlement). "Historically, Nasyri Street is one of the richest and most aristocratic in the Settlement. It is inextricably linked with the names of our renowned educators, merchants and philanthropists. Each of the houses that once belonged to Marjani, Kazakov, Apanayev and Sabitov has both historical and cultural value," said Lenar Zakirov.
The prefect added that 27 cultural heritage sites were located on just five streets of the Old-Tatar Settlement, nine of them – on Kayum Nasyri Street.
"This is not just another place to walk; it is a spiritual center of cultural life for all Tatars living in Kazan and beyond. The Old-Tatar Settlement is a piece of old Kazan where anyone can immerse oneself in unique ethnic culture. I'd like to set the goal before you and me – to take good care of this part of Kazan. This is no easy challenge, but we're equal to it," said Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin.
