GTO program to be launched in Tatarstan schools September 1
(Kazan, KZN.RU, August 21, by Zilya Gayfi). Tatarstan is one of 12 pilot regions, where from September 1, the GTO ("Ready for Labor and Defense") athletic training program, dating back to Soviet times, will be introduced, said Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin at today's August conference of educators.
From the beginning of the school year, students will start training in all schools of the republic, aiming at attaining GTO standards. Students will be able to check their physical fitness as early as April, when mass taking of the GTO tests will kick off. Tatarstan, among other pilot regions, has the right to choose two additional GTO disciplines from among ethnic, military-applied sports or sports especially popular in the region. It is worth noting that by 2017, the GTO program should cover all age groups.
According to the mayor of Kazan, the introduction of GTO will help Kazan students win new victories in sports competitions.
