(KZN.RU, May 10th, by Renat Shirmanov and Ekaterina Andreyeva.) Victory Day celebrations started in Kazan with laying flowers at the Eternal Flame and at the Monument to Mothers and Widows of the Fallen Soldiers in Victory Park.
Tatarstan’s President Rustam Minnikhanov, the Prime Minister of the Republic Il’dar Halikov, the Mayor of Kazan Il’sur Metshin, the State Adviser of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiyev, the Chairman of the State Council of Tatarstan Farid Mukhametshin and other officials took part in the solemn ceremony.
The ceremony participants released white pigeons symbolizing peace on Earth.
An hour later, a celebratory parade to honor the 66th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War was held in Millenium Square.
The Kazan parade was held simultaneously with that in Moscow. Just like last year, there was a live broadcast of the Victory Parade from Red Square in Moscow, during which the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev addressed the countrymen.
Before the very start of the parade, three Mi-8 helicopters flew over Kazan. The aircraft carried fluttering flags of Russia, Tatarstan and the Victory Banner.
A total of over two thousand marchers took part in the parade in Kazan. The parade was headed by the ceremonial troops of the Kazan garrison carrying the Victory Banner and the standards of the Great Patriotic War fronts. Officers and cadets of the Higher Military Command School in WW2 uniforms, tankmen and marines marched in the parade, which ended with a performance by the combined marching band of the Kazan garrison.
The celebrations in the Millenium Square and in other parts of the city continued far into the night. The festivities culminated in the traditional salute. This year it consisted of more than 500 volleys.
