After discussion with the expert community, the Kazan Development Institute
suggested naming the M14 microdistrict in the Privolzhsky district “Gaila” and
the area of the Sovetsky district bounded by Rodina, Gvardeyskaya, Zorge, and
Voznesensky streets “Rodina”. Both names are based on geographical and natural
features, as well as cultural heritage, attractions, and the atmosphere
inherent in these areas of the capital of Tatarstan. Alexey Gorbunov, director
of the Kazan Development Institute, announced this at the Business Monday meeting.
The Mayor Ilsur Metshin explained that during the design and
construction of new areas, buildings are assigned numbers that remain as names
for some time.
“However, for the sense of identity of the residents, it is important
that the beautiful names of the residential areas we are accustomed to take
root from the very beginning. We have assigned this task to the Kazan
Development Institute, as they are involved not only in design but also in
urban planning. Both names - Gaila and Rodina - symbolize important notions for
everyone,”- the Mayor said. He instructed to discuss the proposed names at the
next meeting of the toponymy commission of the Kazan Executive Committee.
Alexey Gorbunov reminded that the initiative to rename M14 district
belongs to deputy of Kazan City Duma, Elena Glukhareva. Currently, the area is
referred to by a construction number, which has no meaning and is associated
with M12 highway for residents.
