(KZN.RU, September 23, by Irina Smirnova ) Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin arrived at work by subway today, thus supporting World Car-Free Day.
Despite the fact that the Day was officially observed on September 22, it was prolonged in Kazan through Monday, September 23. On these days, many give up their cars, using public transportation, cycling or simply moving around the city on foot instead.
"Of course, participation in Car Free Day is purely voluntary. I want to thank everyone who took part in it yesterday and today. I'm sure you enjoyed it," said the Mayor addressing those present at the meeting. He also noted that the event was supported by the President of Tatarstan – yesterday Mr. Minnikhanov got to work by bike.
Ilsur Metshin noted that officials should not neglect public transportation. "Of course, we cannot completely give up our cars. You can't help using a car when you have to go to meetings in different parts of the city,” said the Mayor. “But for us leaders riding public transit is a way of "taking temperature" since one of the priorities of city administration is the improvement of public transportation."
