(Kazan, KZN.RU, March 2, by Albert Murtazin). The solid waste landfill "Vostok" is a major environmental project in Kazan, and the best international experience should be implemented in its construction, said Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin at today's Business Monday meeting.
According to Iskander Giniyatullin, the chairman of the Committee for Housing and Communal Services of the Executive Committee of Kazan, one of the most important tasks of the municipality is to organize household waste collection and recycling. Appropriate programs are being implemented as part of waste management in Kazan. Thus, construction of the "Vostok" landfill has been launched near the Mamadysh highway under the investment program of OOO "PZHKH." Note that the new landfill, whose lifespan is 15 years, will bring garbage disposal safety to a new level and prevent harmful substance seepage into the soil and groundwater.
Iskander Giniyatullin noted that in 2015 the Committee on Utilities plans to complete the "Vostok" landfill construction, continue the development of selective waste collection, update waste treatment and begin the construction of a second landfill at Khimicheskaya Street.
Ilsur Metshin emphasized the need to continue the development of selective waste collection. "Unfortunately, what is the norm in foreign countries has been only a pilot project for us so far. However, more and more houses, courtyards and organizations are practicing selective garbage collection," said Ilsur Metshin. He also stressed that landfill construction should be up to the best international standards. According to the mayor, the new site for waste disposal and recycling is important for urban ecology.
