Kazan residents will be able to pay fares with mobile phones
(KZN.RU, September 27, by Taisiya Basharkina) Public transportation fare payment with a mobile phone is about to kick off in Kazan. This innovation was described by the director of "Transportnaya Karta" Ramil Yakupov.
Paying fares with a mobile phone will become possible thanks to the Near Field Communication (NFS) wireless technology. Russian professionals have learned from other countries' successful NFC experience. To use the technology, one will need to have a small add-on inserted into one's phone at a mobile operator sales office. Following that, the user will tap the reader with the phone in the same way he or she uses a transportation card, and the fare will be debited from the mobile phone account.
According to the speaker, Kazan transportation companies are ready to launch NFC. Now it's up to the mobile operators to implement the service in the coming months.
Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin noted that fare payment with a mobile phone should be implemented as soon as possible. "Transportation cards have made life easier for Kazan residents. People quickly got used to the convenience, and today most have them. We need to further improve the system of non-cash payment for public transportation,” concluded the mayor.
