Kazan zoo to become twice as large
(Kazan, KZN.RU, September 17, by Albert Murtazin). The Kazan Zoological and Botanical Gardens, which will celebrate the 210th anniversary in 2016, will become twice as large by adding a piece of land adjacent to the Rowing Center, said Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin at the retreat workshop, citing the decision of President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov. In parallel with the clearing of the area, the entire zoological and botanic gardens will be renovated.
Currently, the seven-hectare zoological and botanical gardens house 145 species of animals. According to the Kazan Zoological and Botanical Gardens director Fanis Nurmukhametov, today, the zoo inhabitants live in extremely cramped conditions.
According to Ilsur Metshin, President Rustam Minnikhanov decided to expand the territory of the zoological and botanical gardens by adding seven more hectares at the expense of the Lake Kaban area adjacent to the Rowing Center. Also, there are plans to clear the grounds on the other side of the Zoological and Botanical Gardens, currently occupied by the municipal enterprise "Gorvodzelenhoz."
